History of Dhaka
Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh. It is an old city. During
the reign of Mughal emperor Jahangir, Subedar Islam founded it in 1612 A.D. It
was then named Jahangirnagar after the name of emperor Jahangir. Many people
and dignified foreigners visited Dhaka for different purposes, Farashganj,
Armanitola.
Fuller Road. Johnson Road, Mintoo Road, North Brook Hall Road
.Waizghat etc. bear the memories of those foreigners. Dhaka has two parts, the
old town and the new town. Curzon Hall, Dhaka University, High Court and
Supreme Court are in the new town. The foundation of Curzon Hall was laid by
the then Viceroy of India. Lord Curzon in 1904.
In 1905 “ All Indian
Muslim League” was formed here. Dhaka Collegiate School which was the first
govt. school was established in 1835. After six years in the same building
Dhaka College started it’s functioning. The University of Dhaka was formally
established in 1921. Dhaka is the place of many historical events. The great
sepoy movement was occurred in Dhaka in 1857. After partition of India. Dhaka
became the capital of the then East Pakistan. In 1952 Bengali Language Movement
took place. Salam. Barkat. Rafiq laid their lives. Dhaka again became the
capital of independent Bangladesh in 1971 when Bangladesh became a free state.
