Michael Madhusudan Dutt was a popular 19th-century Bengali poet and dramatist. He was first Sonnet writer of Bengali sonnet in the world. He was born on 25 January 1824 in the village Sagordari and Keshobpur Upozilla under Jessore district. He was born in a landlord family. His fathers name was Raj Naraon Dutt and mothers name was Jahagnobi Davie. He studied in Lal Bazer Grammar school of Calcutta, Hindu college and Bishops College. He went to England for study on Lawyer. His profession was lawyer at first life. But he was writer. From an early age, Dutt interested to be an Englishman. Though he was born in a learned Hindu family, he took Christianity as a young man, much to the ire of his family, and adopted the first name Michael. He was disinherited by his father. In his childhood, he was recognized by his teachers as a precious child with a gift of literary talent. His early exposure to English education and European literature at home and his college inspired him to imitate the English in taste, manners and intellect. So he started believing that he was born on the wrong side of the planet, and his society was not gave to value of his intellect appropriately.
He also believed that the West would be more accepted to his creative genius. Michael was a single-minded follower of the famous English poet Lord Byron. So after accepting Christianity, he went to Europe and started writing poetry and drama almost entirely in English. He proved really his higher level of intellectual ability. But he failed to gain the correct right. He understood fully it. With his utter frustrations he saw that he was not regarded as a native writer of English Literature. With is sorrowfully he wrote a sonnet in “Bangle Kopotaksha Nad” which earned him huge reputation in Bangle. Gradually he could realise that his true identity lies here in this Bengal and he was a sojourner in Europe. After he regretted his attraction for England and occident. He returned to Bengal and devoted himself to Bangla literature from this period. He writes the first Bangla epic “Meghnad Badh Kabya”. He is also wrote poetry of “Tilottoma Sombhab”, “Brojonggona”, His English poetry “Captive Ladie” and “Visions of the past”. However he died in 29 June 1873 and cemetery is Lower circular Road of Calcutta.
