Iltutmish was the greatest
of the kings
Iltutmish was the greatest of the
slave kings. He becomes the ruler in 1211 and he had to face number of
–difficulties.
Taj –ud –din Yildoz, who considered
himself to the successor of Mohammad Ghori came to Lahore on year after of
accession of Iltutmish to throne and occupied it for four years until Iltutmish
defeated him in the battle of Tarain in January 1226.
Nasir-ud –Din Quabacha refused to
recognise Iltutmish as his lord. Iltutmish declared war against him in 1217 and
he drove away him out of the Punjab. As the power of Qubacha was not completely
crushed, he managed to remain independent for another decade.
After the death of Qutub –ud –Din
Aibak in 1220 Ali Marden declared himself independent in Bengali and took up
the title of Ala-ud-Din. However, he died after two years. He was succeeded by
Ghias –ud-Din who struck coins in his name. Iltutmish could not bear this and
sent an expedition against him in 1225. During 1225 to 1235 he invaded one
after another country of India. At last be fell ill and was bound to return
Delhi and died 29 April 1236.
